Abstract
The achievements and the problems of the modern theory of doubly-periodic structures like gratings and photonic crystals are analyzed in review. These structures' investigation is usually related with the solution of important theoretical and applied problems. Therefore the methods used for their studying should be both efficient and also reliable, and analysis results are required to be reasonably comprehensive and capable for satisfying the increasing practical demands. According to these criteria, the particular topics of the review are selected.
