Abstract
The commentaries on the poems of Urfi-i Şirazi, one of the most important figures of the Sebk-i Hindi style, have an important place in classical commentary literature. In this article, the method followed in the commentaries of ten of the twenty-five commentators identified so far is given together in the light of the scientific studies carried out on these commentaries. The general method of the commentaries of Urfi-i Şirazi is that commentators translate the couplet or verse by adhering to the source text and revealing the differences between the versions, give the meanings of the words, analyze the grammar of the words, indicate the figures of speech, and interpret the couplet or verse. It is observed that the commentaries are not discussed in detail and are based on a adaptation close to translation. Having read each other's commentaries, some commentators included commentaries of the other commentators in their commentaries. Among these commentators, Sahhaf Ahmed Rüşdȋ Efendi quoted from numerous commentators in her commentary, compared to other Urfi commentators, and also provided important information about Urfi-i Şirazi. Sahhaf Ahmed Rüşdi Efendi has commented on all the odes of Urfi-i Şirazi, 257 selected ghazals, and 150 selected muqattas. In this study, the works of Abdurrahman Abdi's Şerh-i Divan-ı Urfi, Yanyalı Süleyman Efendi's Şerh-i Divan-ı Urfi, Tellizade Vehbî and Urfi-i Şirâzî Divanı Şerhi, Urfalı Ömer Nüzhet's Şerh-i Divan-i Urfi, which are studied as doctoral studies, and Himmetzade Abdî's Şerh-i Bazı Kasa'id-i Urfî, Murtaza Trabzonȋ's Urfi-i Şirazi commentaries, Neşati Efendi's Şerh-i Kasayid -i Urfi, Rodosizade Mehmed Emin Efendi's Şerh-i Kasayid-i Urfi, and Sadık Efendi Etba'ısi's Urfi-i Şirazi commentaries which are studied as master's studies, will be briefly discussed in terms of methodology, and the commentary method of Sahhâf Ahmed Rüşdȋ Efendi's work Şerh-i Divân-ı Urfi-Şirazi will be itemized with examples.
