Almaty is the largest scientific and cultural center of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Due to its geographic location, it is a poorly ventilated city. A constant increase in the number of operated cars from year to year greatly affects the environmental situation in it. The emissions of motor vehicles make the main contribution to the pollution of the city's atmospheric air. This article discusses the development and prospects of production of electric vehicles in the world, including in the Republic of Kazakhstan. Highlights their main advantages and disadvantages compared with cars equipped with internal combustion engines. Also, the shortcomings of the existing schemes of the electric drive of electric transport on direct current with relay-contactor control are described, which according to the technical and economic parameters is inferior to the AC drive. The development of power electronics and microprocessor technology makes it possible to create a highly efficient drive with AC motors, which is recommended as an electric drive for electric vehicles. Perspective developments of electric drive types are described with reference to the power units of electric vehicles for the domestic Kazakhstan manufacturer.
