Background: Cardiovascular system pathologies constitute one of the major non-communicable disorders and strongly contribute to mortality rates in the industrial nations of the world. This study aimed to assess the screening programs for cardiovascular disorders provided to the population of industrial East Kazakhstan Region in comparison with national data for the period of 2013-2017. Methods: We analyzed both regional and national statistics on cases of cardiovascular disorders identified by the routine screening programs over a period of 5 years (2013-2017). The data on the number of patient identified were extracted from annual reports submitted to the Ministry of Health by healthcare establishments. The data on the population number were obtained from the National Statistical Committee. The study design was ecological. Results: Generally, the identification rate of cardiovascular disorders in target population groups of East Kazakhstan region remains low and constitutes 14.6%. Only 4 districts of the region have identification rate of 20%, which is close to target level. Approximately 12% of regional population identified by screening program as being positive was not undergone to further check-ups. The regional primary healthcare settings demonstrate low follow-up rate of patients with previous cerebrovascular accidents at a level of 5.7%. The standard for stratification of cardiovascular risks is not maintained in more than 50% of regional healthcare settings. The special questionnaire constructed to evaluate the knowledge of family practitioners on risk factors of cardiovascular events revealed knowledge gaps. Conclusions: There is a need to propose a set of activities to promote early identification, adequate follow-up and management of patients with cardiovascular disorders in East Kazakhstan. This will require the coordination of efforts of multidisciplinary team consisting of general practitioners, neurologists, interventionists and neurosurgeons Key messages: The identification rate of cardiovascular accidents in East Kazakhstan remains low. There is a need to improve the existing screening programs for cardiovascular pathologies.
