Abstract In the context of the rapid advancement of digital technologies, it is crucial to assess their impact on the cognitive development of students. This study aims to investigate the effect of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) tools on divergent thinking creativity among Kazakhstani students. The creativity indicators measured include originality and cognitive flexibility. The study involved 150 students from three universities, divided into experimental and control groups of 75 participants each. The research methods included the Alternative Uses Test (AUT) for assessing creativity and surveys to measure the satisfaction of experimental group participants regarding the use of AI-assisted learning skills. No significant changes in these indicators were observed in the control group under traditional learning conditions. Regarding the satisfaction of students in the experimental group with innovative teaching, the survey results indicated that 80–90 % of respondents expressed satisfaction across all questions. These findings suggest that the surveyed participants provided very positive feedback on the use of AI in their education. The practical significance of this research lies in demonstrating the potential of digital technologies to enhance students’ cognitive skills, which can be leveraged by educators and program developers.
