Tropilaelaps spp. (Mesostigmata: Laelapidae), ectoparasitic mites originally associated with Asian giant honey bees such as Apis dorsata, A. breviligula and A. laboriosa, have recently become a global concern due to their large impact on western honey bee colonies. This study reports for the first time the detection of Tropilaelaps spp. in a region of Kazakhstan, namely in ten honey bee colonies (A. m. carnica) from three apiaries. We tested larval samples from bee families and confirmed the identification of mites using morphological measurements. The results show a high degree of infestation with Tropilaelaps spp., co-infestation with Varroa destructor and significant reproductive success of the mites. Resultsof this research workemphasize the threat that Tropilaelaps spp. poses to beekeeping in Kazakhstan and show the potential for further spread in Central Asia. Immediate action and close monitoring by national and international authorities is crucial to mitigate the impact on beekeeping and agriculture
