Introduction The article examines the current state and prospects of agricultural trade relations between Kazakhstan and China. Over the years, mutually beneficial cooperation has developed between the two countries in the agricultural sector. However, due to the evolving international geopolitical environment, food security has become one of the most pressing global issues. In China, ensuring grain security has turned into a top national priority. Kazakhstan, with its favorable natural and geographical conditions, geo-economic advantages, and strong potential for producing environmentally friendly agricultural products, serves as an important partner for China. By contrast, China, as a major consumer of agricultural products, possesses advanced agricultural technologies, significant investment potential, extensive logistics capabilities, and a well-developed agro-industrial infrastructure, making it an attractive partner for Kazakhstan. Methods Using systematic, comparative, statistical, qualitative, and situational analytical methods, this study provides a comprehensive assessment of the current agricultural situation in both countries, identifies achievements, existing challenges, and potential opportunities for future development. Results The main objectives of the research are to analyze the current state of Kazakhstan–China agricultural trade relations, examine the structure and key directions of trade, assess trade volumes, identify major obstacles to agricultural development, and explore possible ways to overcome them. The article also analyzes the existing cooperation in investment, technology, logistics, and e-commerce, as well as prospects for collaboration in livestock breeding, crop production, agricultural processing, food standardization, and epidemiological safety. Discussion The novelty of the study lies in its comparative analysis of agricultural trade relations between Kazakhstan and China, aimed at identifying shortcomings and proposing avenues for improvement. The results of the study contribute to a better understanding of the current state and development potential of agricultural cooperation between the two countries. Therefore, the study demonstrates both theoretical relevance and practical significance.
