Abstract The range of polymer composite materials filled with finely dispersed powders is expanding, in part due to the incorporation of previously unused mineral raw materials into the production of fillers. Such a source of raw materials can include waste from the mining industry, as well as minerals already used for other purposes. Low-carbon varieties of the well-known mineral shungite, which contain large amounts of silicon dioxide, represent a previously unused source for the production of polymer composites. The presence of various functional groups in the original shungite and the toluene extract of this filler was studied using IR spectroscopy.
