Translation quality assessment is an act of great importance for the theory and practice of translation studies. It allows you to distinguish a high-quality translation from a poor-quality one, identify “worthy” translators, and train the young ones, develop a general theory of translation, etc. This article analyzes the practical and methodological foundations of the act of assessing the quality of translation. The authors describe various methods for assessing the quality of translation, such as models based on the equivalence theory, functional models, and conduct a practical analysis of the scopos-based evaluation scenario model proposed by Hans Hoenig. Also, a practical presentation of the classification of translation errors proposed by D. Buzaji is proposed. The material for the practical part of the article was the translations in Kazakh and Russian of the textbook “The Language Instinct” by the famous writer Steven Pinker, translated as part of the project “New Humanitarian Knowledge. 100 new textbooks in the Kazakh language”. Noting the practical significance of the above models in assessing the quality of translation, the authors draw attention to the need for even deeper empirical research. The authors also emphasize that subjectivity in the evaluation of translations could be avoided by conducting surveys for a wide range of recipients, by combining the results of various evaluation scenarios and using technologies such as multilingual corpora, automatic analyzers when collecting and processing information.
