The article examines the current state of research on the adaptation of literary texts into the comics format within the framework of Kazakh philology. Despite the growing public interest in graphic forms of storytelling – particularly comics – there is a notable lack of dedicated academic studies focused on the theoretical and methodological foundations of adapting original literary texts for visual formats in the domestic scholarly context. As the literature review reveals, most existing publications focus primarily on textual reduction and simplification, while the principles for working with non-verbal components remain largely underexplored. The authors argue that adapting texts into comics requires not only textual reduction but also a complex, interdisciplinary approach involving philologists, artists, and designers. A particularly important component of this process is identifying the key narrative elements of the source text that warrant visual representation, and providing culturally, semantically, and pragmatically informed commentary to guide illustration. It is also emphasized that the scope of adaptation should not be confined to children's literature; with proper methodological planning, it is possible to produce graphic versions of literary works that are complex in both content and structure. Thus, the article substantiates the need to develop a scientifically grounded methodology for adapting Kazakh literary texts into visual-graphic formats. Such an initiative would not only contribute to the development of a national comic book tradition, but also support the popularization and pedagogical integration of the Kazakh language and literature, ultimately broadening the readership.
