Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the newly independent Central Asian states faced significant challenges such as economic crisis and political instability, which created a fertile ground for transnational organized networks. This chapter analyzes roots, structure, and strategies employed against human trafficking in the region. Women and children, in particular, stand out as the most vulnerable groups. They are being trafficked for forced labor, criminal activities, and sexual exploitation. In most cases, traffickers use deceptive recruitment methods, marriage traps, and fake tourism agencies. This process is enabled by migration flows from poor countries, such as Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, to countries such as Kazakhstan, Russia, and the UAE. In addition, the region has recently become a significant source of foreign terrorist fighters. Human trafficking is a highly profitable activity for organized crime networks, while the conviction rates are low. Corruption and inadequate training within law enforcement agencies make prosecution difficult. The chapter proposes effective ways to combat human trafficking by emphasizing international cooperation, the role of civil society, and establishing more comprehensive legal frameworks.
