A scattering integral equation is used to model the electromagnetic interactions of a 2D generic biosensing configuration with a near-field obstacle. Based on the assumption that the background field does not vary substantially in the spatial vicinity of the object, simplified expressions for its scattering response are obtained. These formulas are applied for a scenario of a circular bioinclusion sandwiched between two planar dielectric fibers, and meaningful conclusions are drawn regarding the detectability of the scatterer for arbitrary textural contrast, size, or distance from the sensors. The article aims at demonstrating an implementation of integral equations that is free from laborious mathematical formulations so that interested students or nonexpert researchers are not discouraged from employing such a versatile analytical tool in understanding light–biomatter interplay.
