Spatial thinking is an important component of geography education. However, the lack of digital simulations in existing traditional teaching hinders students from practically mastering spatial thinking skills. This study aimed to assess spatial thinking and geoecological understanding of high school students using the simulation game SimCity. The study was based on mixed methods, using the quarterly summative assessment (QSA) as quantitative data and the Spatial Ability Scale questionnaire as quantitative data. The experimental group completed city building and spatial planning tasks using SimCity, while the control group used the traditional teaching method. The results showed that the SimCity game allowed them to develop the ability to visually imagine the location of geographical objects, create logical connections, and make geoecological decisions. The fact that the experimental group had a higher average QSA score than the control group (mean = 23.25; SD = 4.14) proves the effectiveness of using game elements. The study presents the SimCity game as a didactic tool for developing spatial thinking and strategic planning skills in geography.
