In this chapter, we discuss the applications of nanomaterials for clean energy generation using solar cells. We focus on oxide nanomaterials, as they are the most commonly used nanomaterials in this type of device, although other nanomaterials are also discussed where relevant. We discuss the functions of nanomaterials in different types of solar cell and discuss how their properties (material choice, material morphology, and material doping and/or defect engineering) affect solar cell performance. For each type of solar cell, we provide an overview of the main challenges and problems to be solved.
