The paper studies and systematises factors resulting in turbocharger (TC) failure. They are divided into structural, technical, technological, operational factors. The factors are listed clearly and result in the deterioration of the reliability of the internal combustion engine (ICE) and turbocompressor (TCR). Turbocharger elements may eventually and irreversibly lose their functionality and fail. This may lead to the failure of the ICE and the automobile as a whole. The theoretical part of the article considers the following issues: theoretical justification of the oil pressure at the inlet to the TCR bearing; theoretical justification of the oil temperature at the inlet and outlet of the TCR bearing; theoretical justification of the oil flow through the TCR rotor bearing; and theoretical justification of monitoring modes. The research program and methodology involve the study of the following issues: output parameters of the TCR under various ICE operating modes; the choice of measuring equipment for research; the laboratory research method; the method of processing and systematization of experimental data. The main result of this part of the research is the development of an experimental work bench. The implementation of all preparatory work and the preparation of the bench equipment was followed by the experimental part. At this stage the following issues were resolved: experimental studies were carried out with variable values of TCR bearing inlet pressure; experimental studies were carried out to monitor oil temperature at the TCR bearing outlet; experimental studies were carried out to monitor a set of factors.
