The article examines the place of sanctions in international politics, as well as methods andmethods of minimizing risks under the influence of sanctions. As you know, today economic sanctions are oneof the most common tools of foreign policy. Sanctions have taken a firm place in foreign policy instrumentsas an alternative or complement to the use of force, as well as to strengthen negotiating positions. They areactively used as a means of forcing individual States to fulfill the political demands of the countries thatinitiated the sanctions. The number of cases of the use of sanctions by the UN Security Council is growing. Atthe same time, mechanisms for circumventing sanctions and mitigating their impact on national economiesand the stability of “target States” are being improved. Often, the application of sanctions becomes thesubject of regulatory and ethical differences between the objects of sanctions (as a rule, these are developingcountries) and the initiators of sanctions (usually developed states act in this role). The initiators considersanctions as one of the legitimate ways of forcing compliance with international obligations or compliancewith certain norms. Sanctioned countries consider them a “prohibited technique”, which is abused by theinitiators of sanctions with an economic and technological advantage. At best, these countries recognizethe legitimacy of sanctions imposed by the UN Security Council, but not unilateral measures of developedcountries. Widespread use in political practice is combined with a broad interpretation of the concept ofsanctions; sometimes measures of trade or economic wars fall under sanctions.
