Drugs on the Page approaches the now-familiar issue of medical drugs in the early modern Atlantic world by focusing on the production of texts on medical drugs, in particular the pharmacopoeia genre. By examining the classifications and arrangements of multiple substances inherent to the pharmacopoeia tradition, rather than an individual object, practitioner, or recipe, the contributors aim to situate the pharmacopoeia as a vital nexus of people, societies, objects, and systems of knowledge from around the early modern Atlantic world. Edited volumes are necessarily a team effort, and the shape of the final volume is substantially determined by who is included, and how their scholarly identities help illuminate the subject at hand. The early modern Atlantic was a necessarily diverse place, the history of which was forged at the intersections of different cultures, and interactions among peoples from all walks of life. The authorship represented in this volume is substantially less diverse. The majority of contributors are white. Ten out of thirteen contributors are men. With all the changes towards making academia a more inclusive place, it is disappointing to see the continued publications of volumes with such an unbalanced cast of contributors. It is hard not to wonder what this volume might have looked like had a different group of experts been included.
