Background: S. aureus colonization in the community and medical facilities may contribute to the extension of such diseases as the surface skin and soft tissue infections and life-threatening diseases–sepsis, osteomyelitis, endocarditis and toxic shock syndrome. S. aureus carriage is a major risk factor for the subsequent development of nosocomial and community-acquired infections. Knowledge of the prevalence of certain MSSA clones can be used to predict the spread of MSSA and MRSA infections.
