Background Integrated approach is a milestone for postgraduate health professional educational system. Since 2015, the module-based learning has been introduced in professional medical education in Kazakhstan. Semey State Medical University (SSMU) started collaboration with European Union’s Program “Erasmus+” in 2016. Environmental hygiene is one of the major priorities for East Kazakhstan area due to activities of the former Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site. Objective The aim of our study was to identify the major problems related to the modernization of MPH program on environmental hygiene. Methods A series of consultations were held with key stakeholders both inside and outside SSMU and graduates of MPH program on environmental hygiene. Key principles for the design of a new program were identified to be the inter-disciplinary approach, case-based learning, and competency-based approach. Results The inaugural class of MPH students on environmental hygiene graduated in Summer 2013. The initial teaching program was not competence driven but stressed on subject/discipline knowledge. Consultations with graduates and stakeholders demonstrated the need to teach a new module on Environmental and Population Health including Radiation Safety and Methodology of Ecological Studies disciplines. More than 70% of the curriculum is delivered through classes with two 6-week practicums per academic year. Another curriculum innovation included a team-based approach, which is delivered through “Learning team” activities. Conclusions The inter-disciplinary approach should be the main principle for environmental health education. Graduate and stakeholder feedback on a modernized MPH program was uniformly positive. Key messages: Introduction of new disciplines related to radiation safety and research methodology will help to solve the existing ecological problems. Inter-disciplinary approach allows MPH graduates on environmental hygiene to obtain new teaching and research competences.
