The author illustrates, on the basis of a landscape field survey, how the techniques and methodology of landscape science can be applied to determining the optimal alignment of a proposed railroad and the prospects of resource development along the route. Attention is given to specific rail-road-building problems, such as land forms, geology, water supply, availability of road ballast, and to more general development questions, such as agriculture and mineral exploitation.
