Random orientations and uniform distributions of rock-forming minerals increase their resistance to pressure under load; the pyramidal fragments into which they are eventually shattered are of regular shape and relatively small, like the biotite granodiorites tested here. Definite orientations of the minerals and their cleavage planes, as in the biotite granites, shorten and lower their resistance to pressure, yielding large, irregular “pyramids.”
