The focus of the research is to establish whether blast-furnace coke may be partially replaced with inexpensive material obtained by processing wastes from phosphorus production and from lead and zinc production, as well as coal-mining wastes in Kazakhstan. On the basis of ferrophosphorus (waste from phosphorus production) and slag (from lead and zinc production), with quartzite flux, a waste-free production cycle may be organized. Commercial products are obtained: ferrosilicon, calcium silicate, and zinc phosphide. The introduction of coal-mining wastes permits reduction in coke consumption and also in the viscosity of the slag obtained, on account of fusible impurities. That improves the process, with economic and environmental benefits. Laboratory experiments give rise to a test program conducted on a prototype 2-MV A furnace at TOO Kainar. The products in the tests are as follows: 400 kg zinc phosphide, 3.7 t ferrosilicon, and around 2.4 t of silicocalcium, meeting the corresponding quality standards. The tests show that it is feasible, at the industrial level, to generate commercial products on the basis of wastes from phosphorus production and from lead and zinc production, as well as coal-mining wastes.
