The article is devoted to the study of regional and tribal specificity of Kazakh traditional carpet art. The diverse material from national academic research suggests that one of the components of variability of Kazakh carpet making is associated with the complex processes of ethno- and culturogenesis. The research methodology is based on the complex application of comparative, semantic, and art historical analysis of the material extracted from scholarly works, as well as artefacts from museum and private collections dating from the late nineteenth to early twentieth centuries. The research trajectories concerning the regional and tribal specificity of carpet art among the Turkic peoples of Central Asia have been studied, leading to the identification of two main approaches with dominant markers. The first approach focuses on the study of the gyol code (or gyol compositions). The second one centers on the identification of a certain set of certain technological techniques, compositional structure of ornament and coloring most preferred in the carpet making of a specific tribe or clan.Materials on regional and tribal specifics of traditional Kazakh carpet art were collected and generalized. The generalization allowed to identify three types of Kazakh carpet products: ethno-territorial, tribal, and mixed. Analysis showed that the studied aspects of Kazakh carpet making in most cases correlate with the second approach, which adequately explains its specific features. In conclusion, the study’s outcomes indicate future prospects for further exploration of the topic. It is noted that in studying the specifics of Kazakh carpet making from the perspective of ethnoart studies, i.e., at the intersection of art history and ethnography, a differentiating approach is productive. This approach takes into account the cultural traditions accompanying the processes of ethnogenesis and, consequently, the system of ethno-codes and their dominant symbols.
