This study analyses the preferences of Generation Z students (first-year students, aged 17- 18) regarding the study of English as a foreign language at universities in Kazakhstan. The aim of this study is to identify the opinions of first-year students (aged 17- 18), representatives of Generation Z, regarding their preferred methods of learning English as a foreign language, as well as to determine the factors that influence their interest and engagement in the educational process. Empirical basis: an online survey of 93 students, analysed using descriptive statistics and qualitative analysis of open-ended responses. Particular attention is paid to interest and academic engagement, the role of social media, preferences for interactive/visual formats, attitudes towards AI tools, as well as characteristics of learning behaviour – from time management and concentration to expectations regarding feedback. The results demonstrate enthusiasm for visual and interactive methods, social media and digital tools: students prefer short tasks and rapid feedback, which fits perfectly with their dynamic learning style. Attitudes towards AI are mixed – they recognise its benefits but fear a loss of autonomy and critical thinking. The conclusions emphasise that it is time to adapt English teaching to the digital habits of Zoomers. Practical value lies in recommendations for curricula and the integration of technology into language education.
