Photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants under visible-light irradiation has emerged as a promising strategy for environmental remediation; however, the lack of systematic comparison between different photocatalyst systems limits the rational design of high-performance materials. In this review, a comprehensive and systematic comparative analysis of silver bromide (AgBr) based photocatalysts is presented, focusing on the relationships between structural design, charge transfer mechanisms, and photocatalytic performance. AgBr exhibits a unique combination of visible-light responsiveness (band gap ~2.6 eV), intrinsic photosensitivity, and in situ formation of plasmonic Ag nanoparticles, enabling synergistic integration of semiconductor and plasmonic photocatalysis. Comparative analysis reveals that photocatalytic performance is strongly influenced by catalyst composition, pollutant type, and operational conditions. Plasmonic Ag/AgBr and Z-scheme heterostructures demonstrate superior performance due to enhanced light absorption and preservation of strong redox potentials, whereas conventional type-II systems may suffer from reduced reactivity despite improved charge separation. Importantly, this review highlights the limitations of commonly used kinetic parameters and emphasizes the need for more rigorous evaluation metrics such as apparent quantum yield (AQY). In addition, the role of reactive bromine species (e.g., Br 0 and Br 2 - ), are identified as an additional and underexplored pathway that may contribute to photocatalytic oxidation in AgBr based systems. Finally, critical challenges, including non standardized experimental conditions, photocorrosion, and Ag leaching, are discussed, and future research directions are proposed. This work provides a unified framework for understanding and designing next-generation AgBr based photocatalysts, bridging the gap between fundamental mechanisms and practical applications.
