The article is devoted to the analysis of information collected by Russian scholars V. Radlov and A. Fedchenko about Samarkand, the former capital of Timur's empire, which became part of the Russian empire, which has not been the subject of special study until now. The studied materials show the diversity of ideas about Samarkand and the beginning of the formation of certain images of the city in Russian science by the second half of the 19th century. The works of V. Radlov and A. Fedchenko are valuable in that they complement each other and reflect two different scientific schools: German and Russian in the study of the regions of Central Asia, including Samarkand. Military orientalists who served in Samarkand and knew the local languages perfectly provided significant assistance in their research. A comparative analysis of the materials collected by V. Radlov and A. Fedchenko on the history and culture of Samarkand and its surroundings allows to identify the features of the scientific approaches of the two outstanding researchers.
