Women of reproductive age are at increased risk of allergic rhinitis, and it can be clinically important during pregnancy. It is complicated to differentiate allergic rhinitis from pregnancy-induced rhinitis and concerns have been raised regarding exposure to medication. This study was conducted to assess the reported prevalence, clinical importance, and therapy of allergic rhinitis in pregnant women in the six publications by a focused descriptive analysis. Prevalence reported depends on the definition of a case. Treatment must begin with differential diagnosis, determination of severity and conservative treatment. After benefit–risk assessment selected intranasal corticosteroids and second-generation antihistamines can be considered when symptoms interfere with sleep, daily activities or asthma control. Rational management should not be related to unnecessary medication or to clinically significant under-treatment.
