The article examines the linguistic and cultural aspects of the transmission of non-equivalent vocabulary in Stephen King’s novel «The Green Mile», one of the most significant works of American literature of the late 20th century. The research was carried out in the context of comparative, contextual and linguistic cultural analysis involving the original text and its translations into Russian and Kazakh (V. Weber, M. Sembaikyzy). Special attention is paid to realia words, proper names, and phraseological units as key carriers of linguistic and cultural information that reflects the social, institutional, and everyday specifics of American reality in the first half of the 20th century, primarily related to the functioning of the US judicial and penal system. The study is based on the classifications of equivalent and non-equivalent vocabulary by L.S. Barkhudarov, S.I. Vlakhov, and S.P. Florin, as well as the principles of linguoculturology and the theory of literary translation, which view language as a carrier of cultural memory and nationally specific meanings. The article identifies and systematizes the dominant translation strategies: calque, functional equivalent, adaptation, and transliteration, and analyzes their frequency, contextual dependence, and pragmatic effectiveness. The results obtained allow us to deepen our understanding of the mechanisms of intercultural communication in literary translation and can be used in the theory and practice of translation, in the teaching of translation studies, linguoculturology, and intercultural communication, as well as in the development of methodological recommendations for translators of literary texts.
