Oil pollutant leakage has emerged as a significant environmental concern, underscoring the urgent need to develop efficient oil-water separation materials to mitigate its detrimental environmental impacts. This study developed a novel biochar-based oil adsorbent. The adsorbent was synthesized from peanut shells pretreated with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and subsequently carbonized. The biochar adsorbent exhibited a layered porous structure and favorable hydrophobicity. The effect of varying PVA solution concentrations on the performance of the adsorbent during modification was investigated.Increasing the PVA concentration increased the specific surface area and total pore volume.Biochar adsorbent modified with a higher PVA concentration (8 wt.%) showed improved oil adsorption performance, achieving a maximum crude oil adsorption capacity of 8.41 g/g, engine oil adsorption capacity of 7.82 g/g, and diesel oil adsorption capacity of 7.63 g/g.Adsorption behavior was well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model. The adsorbent is environmentally friendly and exhibits efficient oil adsorption, providing a potential approach for oil pollution remediation.
