Introduction. This study addresses the problem of improving the energy efficiency of screw compressors operating under variable load conditions typical for pneumatic supply systems of mining enterprises. It is shown that partial-load operation leads to a significant increase in specific energy consumption due to internal leakages and mechanical losses. The lack of efficient solutions that can be implemented without major system modernization determines the relevance of the research. Methods. A comprehensive experimental and analytical approach was applied, including full-scale testing of a screw compressor, simulation of working processes, and statistical data processing. The experimental methodology involved controlled variation of load within a wide operating range and simultaneous measurement of pressure, flow rate, temperature, and power consumption. Special attention was given to the modification of working surfaces using advanced treatment methods to improve tribological properties. Results. The results demonstrated that surface modification reduces internal leakages and friction losses, leading to a decrease in specific energy consumption by 6–8% at full load and up to 12–15% at partial loads. Additional improvements include reduced outlet temperature, lower vibration levels, shorter start-up time, and an increase in compressor efficiency up to approximately 85%. The analysis also revealed a more stable and predictable behavior of the system across different operating modes. Conclusions. It is shown that surface modification of compressor elements is an effective method for enhancing energy efficiency without significant structural changes. The proposed approach improves operational stability, reduces energy losses, and extends the effective operating range of the compressor. Its implementation can contribute to lowering operational costs and increasing the reliability of pneumatic systems in mining applications.
