Abstract This article presents an analysis of the design and performance of polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) bits with rolling rock-cutting elements, which are vital to modern oil and gas drilling operations. PDC bits offer significant operational advantages due to their superior cutting efficiency and durability, reducing non-productive time and enhancing drilling performance across various geological formations. However, abnormal wear, especially thermal degradation and impact damage, poses significant challenges. The study focuses on innovative PDC bits with rolling cutters, designed to address these issues. These rolling cutters enhance bit durability, improve rock-cutting efficiency, and optimize thermal dissipation. The kinematic characteristics of PDC bits with vertically positioned rolling cutters were modeled, revealing that their cutting elements follow a hypocycloid trajectory. The parametric equations governing the movement of cutters were derived, highlighting the relationship between the bit and cutter rotation frequencies. Key findings demonstrate that the speed distribution of the rock-cutting elements is highly uniform, with only a 1.273-fold variation between the fastest and slowest elements, an improvement over conventional bits. The article concludes that the integration of rolling rock-cutting elements into PDC bits significantly enhances bit performance, particularly in abrasive formations, offering longer bit life, improved cutting efficiency, and more uniform wear distribution.
