Abstract This article is dedicated to the construction and analysis of a digital model of a target subjected to high-speed impact. It was shown that simulation of high-speed impacts in Ansys software allows the probability of target penetration to be determined with sufficient accuracy, although a number of parameters directly characterizing the process cannot be identified. It was demonstrated that at an impact velocity of 750 m/s, shock-wave processes cause deformation in a copper target. The digital model illustrates the possibility of determining various geometric parameters of the target after impact. It was also demonstrated that previously proposed calculation methods used to determine parameters of high-speed impact have a rather approximate character with respect to the real process. Images obtained using the JSM-6390LV raster electron microscope equipped with an energy-dispersive analyzer demonstrate rearrangement of the crystal lattice of the target, while images from the TESCAN MIRA LMS raster microscope show features of petal formation at the target outlet and material splashing at the inlet. The paper also provides information on the crater floor that is not directly related to the contact interaction between the projectile and the target. Using the digital model, it was experimentally verified that deformation carriers have a wave-like shape at the mesoscopic scale.
