Single-phase power factor correction converters are widely used in battery charging applications, LED lamp drivers, and front-end rectifiers, among other applications. The control method has to preserve a unity power factor on the AC side and control the DC output voltage to its reference value. However, conventional controllers are based on the proportional-integral (PI) controllers, which provide slow dynamic performance. Additionally, PI controllers have a limited rejection capability for disturbances. Additionally, conventional PFC systems utilize a large number of sensors, particularly on the input side, where current measurement is required for controlling the input power factor and harmonics. This paper presents an optimized sliding mode controller (SMC) for the F-typebased power factor correction circuit. The proposed method also eliminates the required input-side AC current sensor. The presented F-type PFC circuit is new and offers superior benefits than the T-type and NPC counterparts. The proposed optimum design eliminates the chattering-related problems of SMC while preserving a fast dynamic response, a high power factor, and superior performance compared to the conventional PI method. The marine predator algorithm (MPA) optimizer is presented to design the SMC optimally. The obtained results confirm the superior SMC performance over the conventional PI method, while achieving simplified design and implementation procedures.
