Electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) remain indispensable for removing particulate matter from industrial flue gas, yet their conventional designs struggle with fine and ultrafine particles and are energy‑intensive when load conditions fluctuate. This article delivers a comprehensive assessment of modern control strategies - high‑frequency energisation, pulse energisation, adaptive intermittent control and machine‑learning‑enabled optimisation—and hybrid gas‑cleaning approaches that integrate wet electrostatic scrubbing (WES) with dry ESPs. Drawing on published research and real‑world deployments, including the installation of a $13 million electrostatic precipitator at Kazakhstan’s Ekibastuz GRES‑1 power plant that boosts ash collection to 99.6 %, we synthesise data into comparative tables and diagrams. We also examine a novel pilot‑scale WES that achieved 97.3–99.67 % particulate matter removal at 30 kV. Our analysis shows that combining advanced power‑supply waveforms with adaptive control and hybrid wet–dry designs markedly improves particle charging, reduces re‑entrainment and cuts energy consumption. The article concludes by outlining future research directions, emphasizing the need for full‑scale trials in Kazakhstan and elsewhere, integrated digital twins for control optimisation and techno‑economic studies that balance capital cost with emission‑reduction benefits.
