In today's world, self-medication is becoming an increasingly common practice among young people due to the availability of medicines, lack of time to consult a doctor and lack of awareness of the risks of self-medication. This study aims to conduct a comprehensive scoping review of self-medication practices among university students, examining its frequency, contributing factors, associated health and academic consequences, and the effectiveness of existing prevention and intervention measures. A literature search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus using keywords related to self-medication among university students. Of the 1051 articles initially identified, 91 were selected for inclusion following relevance screening. The literature review reveals that self-medication can lead to serious health and social problems such as the development of side effects, antimicrobial resistance, poorer general health, and decreased academic performance. In addition, existing strategies to prevent self-medication are reviewed, including improving health literacy, increasing control over the sale of prescription drugs, and developing accessible health counseling services. The results of the study showed that self-medication is still an unresolved public health problem, as evidenced by its high prevalence. Self-medication is influenced by the inconvenience of accessing health care as well as unhealthy behaviors associated with seeking health care. There is a need to improve access toquality health care and to promote good health-seeking behavior.Keywords:self-medication, self-administration, students.
