This study explores the interplay between social media technology, knowledge sharing, and innovative work behavior in fostering open innovation within Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). Drawing on empirical data from 65 SMEs in Pekanbaru, Indonesia, the research employs a quantitative approach using Structural Equation Modeling via SmartPLS to analyze the relationships among five key variables. The findings reveal that social media technology significantly enhances knowledge sharing, which in turn supports open innovation. However, while knowledge sharing positively influences both idea generation and idea realization, only the latter has a direct effect on open innovation. Interestingly, idea generation alone does not lead to innovation unless mediated by idea realization. This indicates that the successful implementation of innovative ideas is critical for achieving meaningful innovation outcomes. The study contributes both theoretically and practically by identifying the mechanisms through which SMEs can leverage social media platforms and internal knowledge flows to access external ideas, create synergies, and implement innovative strategies. For practitioners, this research highlights the importance of encouraging knowledge-sharing behaviors and investing in tools that facilitate collaborative innovation. For academia, the study offers a refined understanding of innovation processes in SMEs, particularly in emerging economies.
