The interaction between transportation and the environment results in various types of pollution including air pollution, noise, vibration and electromagnetic effects. The increasing use of motor vehicles in large cities contributes to the growth of the vehicle fleet and the increase of air pollution. In modern cities, one of the key problems is the deterioration of the environmental situation caused, in particular, by road transportation. Improving the environmental performance of the urban environment is an urgent task that requires a comprehensive approach. This article considers the possibility of solving this problem through the rational organization of traffic management. The driving-cycle method is commonly used to evaluate the environmental performance of vehicles. Automated Traffic Management Systems (ATMS) effectively reduce delays, improve traffic safety, and enhance environmental performance. However, they also have limitations and require optimization through mathematical models and control methods. To achieve environmentally friendly traffic management, coefficients can be introduced to calculate the emission of adverse factors by individual vehicles. In the proposed model, the combined negative effect is represented by a single criterion with a weighting coefficient ì, which is estimated using theoretical analysis and experimental data. The optimization problem is reduced to determining the optimal traffic light control parameters that minimize the negative factors. The existing methods of road traffic management are analyzed and new approaches aimed at reducing the negative impact of road transport on the environment are proposed. Particular attention is paid to the development and implementation of intelligent traffic management systems capable of optimizing traffic flows, reducing congestion and, as a consequence, reducing emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere.
