Nickel (Ni) composite coatings fabricated via electrodeposition have garnered significant attention due to their enhanced microstructure, tribological performance, and corrosion resistance. This review provides a comprehensive analysis of recent advancements in Ni-based composite coatings, emphasizing the influence of embedded reinforcements such as ceramic particles, polymers, and metallic phases on their structural and functional properties. The microstructural characteristics, including grain size refinement, phase composition, and surface morphology, are critically discussed in relation to the deposition parameters and incorporated particles. Furthermore, the tribological behavior of Ni composite coatings, particularly their wear resistance and frictional performance, is examined, highlighting the mechanisms contributing to improved durability under sliding and abrasive conditions. In addition, the corrosion resistance of these coatings is evaluated, focusing on the role of reinforcement particles, passive film formation, and electrochemical stability in aggressive environments. The review also explores recent developments in electrodeposition techniques, including pulse current and pulse-reverse deposition, to optimize coating performance. Finally, current challenges and future perspectives are addressed to guide further research and industrial applications of Ni composite coatings in protective and functional surface engineering.
