Abstract This study critically examines the representation of ethnic minority groups in Kazakhstani Russian-language textbooks for secondary schools. Based on the analysis of the textbook content, the chapter demonstrates that the dominant national ideology and unequal ethnic power relations are reflected and reinforced through the selection and presentation of knowledge about people and languages in all reviewed textbooks. Ethnic minority people, their languages, and cultures are barely mentioned. Discussion of these omissions adds to our understanding of the uses of school discourses for constructing narratives of national homogenization and unification in postsocialist contexts.
