The widespread use of idioms across languages highlights their cultural significance and the shared cognitive frameworks that shape their evolution. This cross-linguistic presence underscores the role of cultural exchange in the development of idiomatic expressions. For instance, idioms like spill the beans exhibit syntactic flexibility, allowing for adaptations such as spill the tea or spill your guts, which acquire new meanings in different contexts. In digital communication, particularly on platforms like TikTok and Twitter, spill the tea has emerged as a central phrase in discussions of gossip, emphasizing its role in contemporary discourse. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the idiom spill the tea, tracing its historical origins, cultural relevance, and ethical considerations, as well as examining its evolving usage in modern contexts. Using a dataset of millions of tokens, we analyze the frequency and concordances of both traditional and modified idioms. Additionally, we investigate the historical background of these expressions, incorporating insights from a survey conducted among American students at Al-Farabi Kazakh National University. While idioms are often considered fixed linguistic units, their ongoing transformation—driven by cultural shifts, social media, and youth language—illustrates the dynamic nature of language and its adaptability to societal change.
